South Dakota may turn ancient site into state park
Blood Run is a 1000 acre archeological site on the South Dakota-Iowa border, it is an area that was inhabited for over 8,500 years until the 1700s and became a place of primary importance to the Oneota people and later the Native American Omaha tribe, which now resides on the Omaha Reservation which straddles Nebraska and Iowa. The site is one of immense cultural, historical and symbolic important and there are plans afoot to turn it into a state park for the enjoyment of all.
The site is already a U.S National Historic Landmark and is part of the U.S National Register of Historic Places due to the fact that it contains ancient structures built by the Oneota people. Oneota is a designation used by archeologists in referring to a cultural complex that occupied the Great Lakes and eastern plains regions between AD900 and the 1700s. Read more
